Join us as we explore ways to improve patient care, PT practice and elevate student learning through evidence-based teaching.
Welcome to the Healthcare Education Transformation podcast, where today we'll be talking with Drs. Yvonne Colgrove, Ph.D., PT and Stephen D. Jernigan, Ph.D., PT, FNAP. They are focused on educational research and elevating the student learning experience. We discuss how they started the LEARN PT lab at the University of Kansas, the logistics for the LEARN PT lab, tips and tricks to implement an educational learn lab, and becoming a leader in education research across all health professions.
Yvonne Colgrove, Ph.D., PT, has been active in a variety of
scientific endeavors and is interested in improving function for
individuals who suffer from chronic conditions, having worked with
patients with Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and chronic
low back pain.
In 2004, Colgrove joined the faculty in the KU Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science. In addition to serving as director of clinical education, she has taught courses in administration and ethics. She routinely addresses learning issues when physical therapy students are on full-time clinical rotations and manages hundreds of student clinical rotations over the course of a year.
Feel free to email Dr. Colgrove at firstname.lastname@example.org
Stephen D. Jernigan, Ph.D., PT, FNAP, has a clinical background
in outpatient orthopedic physical therapy. He was appointed
director of the University of Kansas physical therapy doctoral
degree program in March 2017 and currently serves as a preceptor
for physical therapy students in an interprofessional teaching
clinic associated with the KU Department of Family Medicine.
In early 2018, Jernigan and faculty colleagues in the department established the Leveraging Education And Research iN Physical Therapy (LEARN PT) laboratory to promote excellence and collaboration to optimize physical therapy education.

If he helps some others with terminal degrees or other healthcare clinicians along the way, then it’s a bonus! He is also the owner of PTEducator.com , FGI Consulting, and Epic Therapy and Wellness. His areas of interest are in the realms of Geriatrics, Service Based Learning, and Business.
